Make sure you start with a small fire to set the paint or the paint will burn right off. I go with three small fires over a week or so to make sure the paint is fully cured. Here is the barrel in action! You might be able to tell that I didn't cure the paint on mine and cooked it right off. The smoke was terrible. Be smarter than me :)

I used to sit outside in the middle of a New England blizzard and be nice and warm with the barrel fire. This was a fun project and I got many years of enjoyment with the barrel stove.
